Dear John,
From one teacher (OK it was five years ago and only for 6 months but hey!) try doing it in reverse. Get your students to pick out their favourite character and do a character profile on them. Something beyond the age, gender, appearance thing. Find out why they like that character and then transpose it to a book that appeals.I know you have to stick to a curriculum, but this might round out the experience for both you & them and help the class move on from big bangs and monsters. Sadly most kids get far too much 'realism' in their everyday life nowdays, which is why they tend to go the sci-fi route. Good luck anyway.
