I believe that in France ships are regarded as masculine, so that the
opposite of David Bamford's quandary can arise. For example, I remember reading many years ago about a major French ship called
"Le France", though the country itself is of course "la France".

So are there two opposing traditions in anglophone and francophone
Canada?
