You're right. What is 'normal' nowdays has nothing to do with 'normality' in the '30's.
However, I wonder how many 'slum' mothers have had access to a nurse for their youngest at any time.
And what another correspondent reminded me is of how insular a life I lead. I had completely forgotten about the cheap source of childminders in some countries. In New Zealand, apart from some professional nannying(which is not the same as having a '30's nurse) or minding done by grandparents or other 'whanau', childcare is done by almost exclusively by parents or a daycare.
