Of course S&A were elitist. Making polite conversation on private yachts (SW); all at Boarding schools (I'm not sure about the D's, prob. at Manchester Grammar, St Paul's or some quasi-private Day school); when working class boys were depicted (Jackie; Bill in PD; Death & Glories), AR's heart wasn't really in it (and in the Video of CC/BS the Death & Glories wore blazers with school crests , an unbelievable howler...)
It was the same with the Boy's (text) Comics - Hotspur, etc right thru WWII. The most prominent [school] stories were at Greyfriars type Boarding schools - a totally unknown environment to 100% of its readers.
I believe George Orwell wrote at great length on this precise topic.
AR sort of marginalized the lower (serving) classes, all of them had hearts of gold except the Farmer's wife in PP.
At least the Oxus girls had no fears about mentioning maids, nannies, waitresses and Upper class shopping in London ...
