It's stretching a poor memory a long, long way, but I vaguely recall that my parents and grandparents had lots of little bits of doggerel just like that which they would trot out at the appropriate time, to bring our wayward attitudes back into line. Don't forget that a lot of "classical" children's lit. was quite gruesome; "Hansel & Gretel" for instance. For a reason I cannot remember, "Tom and the Water Babies" terrified me.
