I queried Mary Walker, who wrote the column for the November, 2001 Signals from TARSUS which apparently was reprinted in the latest Signals (we haven't seen it on this side of the Atlantic yet). Mary responds:

"A few years ago, our family did some hiking in the Wasatch Mountains in Utah which included climbing to the top of one peak (I don't remember the name of it). At the top of this mountain there was a notebook in which people who reached the top could put their names and a message. I guess we all expected there to be something like that on Kanchenjunga...I really was under the impression that it was a pretty common thing, at least in the US."
