I too was going to mention Pike's Peak, but Robert Dilley has beaten me to it. Like him I have struggled to the pinnacle of that mountain in a comfortable car and have similarly returned triumphant with a suitable trophy of the strenuous ascent - in my case a neat little date displayer which rotates to show the next day.
Thank goodness there is nothing like "all kinds of museums, shops, and an observation tower..." on the top of Kanchenjunga. (incidentally, the famous crisp-eating sheep seems to have retired...)
