I just fished a key-chain (with a dinky little thermometer on it) out of my pocket. It proclaims that it was obtained (by me) from one of those inaccessible Western US real mountains -- 14,110ft/4301m-high Pike's Peak in Colorado. My entire family and I struggled painfully up in best US tradition, in our trusty family car. It was hard work -- the lazy ones came up by the mountain railway. The car really deserves Sherpa status -- it had earlier cramponed to the top of Mt Washington, New Hampshire (6288ft/2293m). Admittedly, the kids were younger and lighter then.
(I did climb Lassen Peak, California (10,453ft/3186m) under my own steam -- and with gratitude that it didn't decide to do a Mt St Helens).
