Robert's comment about the Pike's Peak railway had me accessing a search engine. It came up with the following link to a fascinating web site with lots of great photos and history etc. of a most interesting railway line.

I have heard about such railways, as for example to the top of Snowdon in Wales and also another to the top of Snaefell on the Isle of Man, but I hadn't been aware of such lines in the USA.
