A pedantic after-thought to my reply to Prue Eckett (in a posting now deleted) about the source of the saying ‘I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it’: This is only attributed to Voltaire, by S G Tallentyre in The Friends of Voltaire (1907).
I'm sure AR read Voltaire (I'm now on-topic). A quotation which definitely comes from Voltaire, and which you might think relevant to Tarboard recently (or not) is: ‘… il est bon de tuer de temps en temps un AMiral pour encourager les autres’.
Better still, I like this, from Tom Stoppard yesterday: ‘The essence of liberty is not that my interests should be tolerated, but that I should tolerate yours.’
