I quite agree. This happens frequently in all the services to this day.

In fact the Royal Navy has a further interesting case where the "rank" above Captain; Commodore, is in fact an appointment and upon relinquishing that appointment an individual may "remain" a four ring Captain.

The former could not have been the case here unless of course Ted Walker managed to so irritate the Lords of the Admiralty on his brief visit that he was immediately reverted!!
