While it doesn't appear to be the case here, temporary promotions do not seem to be unknown. I recently read "Diary of an Aviator", the autobiography of Air Vice Marshal Sandy Johnstone. He was promoted to "acting" rank (and pay IIRC) for several postings which reverted once the posting was completed.
