I haven't attempted to heave Nancy to yet though the feeling is that she, being a long keel boat, should settle very nicely either under reefed main and staysail or staysail alone. I can sympathise with John for not trying though - reefing the main recently nearly knackered this AM plus a couple of others(equally ancient) so running before it all made sound sense.
I recall in "Tales of Old Dartmoor" Major Bloodnok's reply when being told that the other vessel was heaving to - "Well don't just stand there - heave to back at them!!"
Nancy will ferry to Southwold in the next ten days so we'll give it a try and report back.
P.S. Q: How do you repel boarders??
A: Stop changing the bed-linen!!
