If anybody has yet answered Ed's questions about the dimensions of real
places, I've missed it, so I'll have a go.

Peel Island is very small - maybe about 100 yards long, excluding the
tail of rocks and islets at the harbour end, and 50 yards wide or less.
Blake Holme on Windermere is of similar size. I think Wild Cat is
primarily an enlarged version of Peel.

Coniston is about 5 miles long and half a mile wide.

Windermere is about 10 miles long. South of Bowness (Rio) it's about
half a mile wide, north of Rio it's nearer a mile.

The top of Coniston Old Man is 2633 feet above sea level (if you're
climbing it from lake level you skip the first 160 feet or so).
Not enough to cout as a mountain even in Britain - I think we have a
threshold of 3000 ft. We probably chose that because if we'd set it at
3500 ft there'd have been no mountains in England, if at 4000 none in Wales,
and if 5000 none in Scotland.
