Geoffrey of Monmouth was a medieval historian who wrote "History of the Kings of Britain" which is the basis for many of the Arthurian tales. As far as I know he met a peaceful end. Now, the illegitimate son of Charles II, who led the men of the West Country to defeat at Sedgemoor and paid for it with his life, was, if memory serves, James, Duke of Monmouth.
