They were not at the actual four firs when they looked down the Amazon valley and couldn't quite see Beckfoot. They had to go a bit to the left. It doesn't say whether they could then see down past the ridge and see Beckfoot from there. They do know that they could be seen coming straight down towards the lagoon from the moor. So perhaps the firs were visible.
My copy shows what appears to be the ruined wall they followed down the hill to the woods coming diagonally down from the fir tree specks.
