I don't know much about the switchboard end of things, but I do recall one advantage of the hand crank phone you describe. I lived in N.Z. in 1982 near Mayfield and if you were visiting any of the 7 or 8 neighbours on your line, you could answer your own ring - a primitive but effective method of call forwarding.
