John, I think the variability of word count with MS Word has less to do with the things you cite as to questions such as chapter heading quotations and whether they are counted. Also, when Ed interpolated his own text in place of an illustration, of course those would be legitimate "words" for a word processor.

Certainly running "American" MS Word for word count against an English transcription of the books didn't generate spelling issues, etc. -- I simply got a word count. But of course I can't be entirely sure just what went into the word count. Still, I would expect the count to be accurate within about 1%.
