Thanks everyone for you help. I grew up in the 40's and 50's. At the age of 10 I owned a real bow and arrow albeit a boys size. So did two of my friends. However we were only allowed to use them under supervision in the back garden. There was never any suggestion of us being allowed to take them outside. I imagine that because the arrows had metal tips, these bows would have been deadly weapons, not the low powered types we made ourselves from bamboo canes. I know parents did not worry so much in those days, but really dangerous things were always controlled. I therefore think, knowing how my parents thought that AR found he had to soft pedal the archery.
With regard to 'war' Most boys play rugby or soccer, and girls hockey can be a daunting thing. I think that being young and fit, they enjoyed a bit of rough and tumble. I know I did, even in my late twenties I often wrestled with my brother in law. As another correspopndent mentioned, geting hurt, was just accepted
