During the 1960's a colleague and I were working in the bush doing geophysics near a holiday resort. The resort, Mt. Buffalo [Victoria], has a huge rambling hotel at which we decided to stay. We were staggered to find upon presenting ourselves at the dining room that we were refused entry because we were not wearing ties! Another guest, who had come prepared, lent us a couple of ties. These looked very odd to us, wearing our loud check woollen shirts, but had the effect of allowing us to eat! We had contemplated using bootlaces as "Col. Sanders" ties!
