The best reference that I have come across is "Coniston Copper, A History" by Eric Holland. There are references to Oscar Gnosspelius, "Squashy Hat", and John Shaw, "Slater Bob", There are plenty of gory details about accidents fatal and otherwise. There are many detailed drawings, photos and maps. As for the depth of the mines themselves some shafts were sunk to 150 fathoms or more BELOW surface level.
