The story is not so much about superstition as about the irony of fate. It uses folk-tale plot mixed in with sharp social observation. So I don't think the explanation that AR was trying to write about peasants he knew without ID'ing the locale he knew. Is there a source for the legend described? I'll try finding a folklorist to comment.
