I believe the Ankou legend is an old one in Brittany. Ankou seems to be represented as a sterotypical death figure, skeletal, carrying a scythe. The only unusual element is that of death becoming the last person of the year to die. The story seems to be reasonably well known in folk lore circles and ransome may have come across it at some time.
