The corks used to be used by the old "sundowners", itinerant shearers who used to walk or cycle from one shearing shed to another in the days before cars were common [i.e. before Second World War]. They are no longer used, or rather I have never seen anyone wearing them, and I spent my career in the bush. They have become one of those folklore icons that only appear in tourist traps. Certainly in Melbourne, flies are now a rarity compared to what they used to be.
