The Aussie hats with corks suspended by strings from the brim to keep the flies away were worn by Barry McKenzie, a Barry Humphries (aka Edna Everidge) character in a cartoon strip about the adventures in London of Barry McKenzie from Moonee Ponds, Melbourne (like Barry Humphries). It was illustrated by Nicholas Garland and appeared I think in Private Eye.

Published in books, and filmed in 1972 as “The Adventures of Barry McKenzie” in which Barry Crocker played Barry McKenzie and Barry Humphries appeared as a psychiatrist. Sequel “Barry McKenzie Holds His Own” (1974) didn’t quite pull it off, even if Barry McKenzie did!
