Peggy, Meg, Maggie are all well known diminutives for Margaret, so we can assume that Peggy was named Margaret formally. However, the tendency of people to use pet or nicknames seems to be very usual.
Thinking only of Ransome characters all of the following use diminutives.
Richard Callum is Dick, Peter is Pete, Joseph is Joe, William is Bill, Jackie is probably John or maybe James, Bridget is Bridgie or Vicky, James Turner is Jim, Don is probably Donald, Thomas Dudgeon is Tom.
