Indeed, stopping and restarting the engine in the opposite direction to achieve reverse thrust is what one does with the little Blaxland single-cylinder petrol engine fitted to my former putt-putt, Serenity.
But I confess when I wanted to go astern I slipped the clutch, shipped the oars, and rowed,,,,
