Roger’s interest in engines appears strongly in PD, which is chronologically placed between SA and SD although written after SD:

In Chapter 1 (PD page 21, Red Fox pb) Captain Flint says:
“Oh yes Roger, we heard all about your picture ...... of (the battle of) Salamis .... and how you put funnels on all the triremes. You’ll be an engineer before ever you’ll be a sailor. You’ve been at the engine already in this ship .....”. Roger grinned a little shyly “How did you know” he asked. “One large smudge of grease on your left cheek” said Captain Flint. “There’s nowhere else you could have got it. Simple eh?”

Roger and Gibber had vanished soon after breakfast. Everyone knew they must be in the engine-room (Chapter 2, page 28)

“She’s winning like anything” said Roger “Hadn’t we better start the engine” (Chapter 9, page 128).

In one book (PD?) Roger and Gibber overgrease the engine and it won’t start.

PS: appreciated the new PD Quiz on the AR site - especially as I got all eight questions right the first time; never since!
