As far as I can recall, there is nothing in S&A to suggest that Roger
is interested in engines. At the beginning of the book we find him
apparently sharing John's dismissive view of steamships. It is only in
some of the later books (only PD, WDM, ML, and GN, I think), in which
he actually gets a chance to work with engines, that we find he likes
them. I dimly remember being surprised on first reading one of these
books - my previous impression of Roger had been based on the views he
seems to share with John on the opening page of S&A.

It is not difficult to imagine Roger, like any young child, echoing
some view recently expressed by an elder, while (almost simultaneously)
becoming aware of his own different view.

As for floating gin palaces, the Margoletta suggests that AR may have
agreed exactly with Dan's father's view.
