There are pictures if xbows in Swallowdale at the end of chapters in my edition.
In SA Nancy and Peggy both seem to have bows of unspecified type.
My own guess is that if they made their own bows as children do, then they had relativly short bows that they could use either as long or xbows according to need.(In SA they are using them kneeling in the Swallows tents.)
