Canada is another such hysterical country. A few years ago, the Vancouver
Health Department, finding there was nothing better to do,
decided it must do something about the freshly barbecuad sides of pork
hanging in the butcher shops in Chinatown. Must have a heat lamp to
keep them warm, scolded the Department, otherwise customers might be
infected with salmonella, anthrax, bubonic plague, etc. Despite grumbles
from the public (Chinese and Western) the butchers had to comply. No
matter that the Chinese have bought pork this way for centuries. It was
the same insane Health Department that decided to ban smoking in
ALL public places, including pubs. The tourists couldn't understand
what was happening - neither could anyone else. Now, I see the anti-
smoking hysteria had subsided somewhat, and the free citizens of
are now allowed to smoke in pubs.
