Wasn't it a race? I'm imagining (from memory) that it was some Cumbrian, cross country form of the sport one finds in places like Romford and that Ransome was "going to the dogs".
It never occurred to me that they were hunting-dogs in particular. It was Mr Swainson that started talking/singing about hunting. I don't have the books with me, more's the pity, so I may have mixed a few things up.
