Well shooting would be just fine, Dan, if the foxes very kindly stood still while you took aim. They do not. As they are reasonably large mammals, and fleet of foot, a shotgun blast will not drop them. You need to be a pretty good marksman, with a good hunting rifle. You will need to make absolutely sure that your bullet cannot do any harm if you miss. Foxes usually hunt at night. The usual argument against shooting foxes (advanced by those who favour hunting with hounds) is that there is a fair risk that you will only wound the animal, leading to a slow and painful death.
Etc etc. Can I join Ian in appealing to all overseas Tarboard correspondents not to pursue this topic, apart from the Ransome implications? We have all had more than enough of it in the UK!
