The book was read in instalments on the BBC two weeks ago, and I caught up with the last two, which covered the day of the opening of the railway, and Huskisson's accident.
It said clearly that he was taken by a train back towards Manchester, but his condition was so bad that they stopped at a rectory en route, and Mr Ransome was brought post haste to attend to him there. He died before he could be moved to a hospital.
He was an immensely popular MP for Liverpool - which was why he was on the inaugural train - and his funeral brought the city to a standstill.
What I do not understand is why there is a memorial plaque to him in Chichester Cathedral, over 200 miles away.
