Whether it can still happen depends on the children's parents, I fancy.

In the next seven years, I will find out. We live in a small market town at the head of a sheltered estuary, about 20 miles from Secret Water as the crow flies (and rather more as the boat sails!) Elder boy is 7 and younger boy is 0.

My parents allowed my sister, age 12, and I, age 17, to go off camping cruising round the coast in an open boat with an ex-Army groundsheet over the boom for a tent, and when I reflect that, on one occasion, having said, by coinbox phone, that we would go North to Aldeburgh, we ran South instead and into Goblin Creek, where we were gale bound and could not get ashore to 'phone for two days, I fancy they had admirable self control!

I hope I can live up to them.
