I read my first Ransome--Secret Water--at the age of 12. It was a prize received in a summer reading program at my public library. Since then, I have collected all Ransomes in hardback (eight American publishers, four Cape) and re-read them about every other year. Unfortunately, neither my wife nor I were able to instill the joy of reading in our children--despite the fact we provided a congenial atmosphere: 30 filled bookcases throughout our home.
