This was one of the points made by Susan Cooper in KING OF SHADOWS, in which an American boy timeslips and becomes Shakespeare's apprentice (as so many of us do). One reason he is so readily accepted is that his accent is correct.
Despite my sneering comment about the huge number of people who have become Shakespeare's apprentice (Geoffrey Trease, Marchette Chute, Antonia Forest and - I think but this one could be wrong - Hilda Lewis, for a start); KING OF SHADOWS is one of the better ones.
Note exciting use of semi-colon. I've been reading Lynne Truss's new book on pronunciation, EATS, SHOOTS AND LEAVES, which is very enjoyable and appears accurate.
