From a fellow other-side-of-the-pond-er, we gave in and purchased a multi-region DVD player, and have been happily watching whatever tickles our fancy ever since. They are a little more expensive than one-region players, but not that much.
It would be lovely if more Americans spent time reading at all, reading better quality material, or just even paying more attention to other parts of the world.....seems like a losing battle, but I still tell folks about The Books. Every once in a while, we get someone to read them, and then at least one more person understands what we mean when we call spare campers in "our" woods "walruses"!
