I personally prefer many aspects of the Webb illustrations, the "thirties-ness" comes through wonderfully

Yes; that's what I like about them too. The thirties was a wonderful period for art and design- on Monday I'm meeting a friend at the National Portrait Gallery to look at their Wyndham Lewis show.

But that quality also encompasses the Hullabaloos; gaudy pyjamas, yachting caps and treacly pop songs (personally, I love the pop songs) and AR hated all of that, holus bolus.

So it was quite understandable that he didn't like the Webb pictures, even though they were jolly good.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the Webb pictures for SD. But I do understand; we moved house last year, and it was absolute hell.
