I found them in my local library in Silver Spring, MD (suburb of Washington D.C.) when I was somewhere around 10, in the early 1950s. They had all twelve. I occasionally looked for them when I had occasion to visit a library in other locations and frequently found at least a few (possibly a side effect of winning the Newberry - children's librarians would have been aware of them). Much later (early 1980s) I found the Puffin editions in a children's bookshop in Berkeley, California. Two SAs, one of which was the Puffin SA from 1978 with cover pictures from the Swallows and Amazons film - the first indication I had that there had been a film.

American TARS in general comment that they've never met anybody else (or very few) that know the books, but the Godine editions have made them available in at least some bookshopss.
