"Now, on the sailing side of things, as andyb mentions, the Blacketts have done no sea sailing that we are aware of. I postulate that, green with envy of the Swallows' adventure with the Goblin, Nancy has badgered her Uncle Jim into taking her and Peggy sailing in a big boat, which is why Uncle Jim has borrowed the Sea Bear from Mac."
That is an interesting point, Andrew. It has been awhile since I read GN, so I can't remember if there is any reference to the other books other than saying that the D's know how to sail Scarab, but are not experienced in a big boat. And of course, Sea Bear is much bigger than Teasel. Are there any time references to WDMTGTS?
There have been comments before about how the characters seem more grown up in GN. So unless there is internal evidence such as referring to P&M as being last year or some other time reference, is there any reason not to believe it is 2-3 years later, and that the Blacketts have had some sea going experience by then? Nancy seems awfully capable with swinging the lead, and there is an experienced feel to most of the characters. I know this could be because it was at the end of the journey and they had time to gain experience, but not necessarily.
I think this is another one of those instances where we only know what happens in the stories themselves, and not "in between" the books, (though of course we like to speculate about such things.
