At the time of the Vietnam war I edited a story by Julian Pettifer, for '24 Hours', about an operation by the Korean Tiger division, by the sea half way up the peninsula. Leaflets warning the local population to clear out of the way had drifted across into a neighbouring area, and an unexpectedly large number of Vietnamese turned up on the beach. The Korean soldiers spoke no Vietnamese, the Viets spoke no Korean, but they got on in Chinese, by drawing ideograms in the sand. Neither side could pronounce the language, but they could read it.

It was an amazing scene. I've never forgotten it.
