Hope this isn't too controversial but I do sometimes wonder whether too much isn't made of the postcards for illustrations. A good postcard of Friar's Crag may have looked rather similar to the Darien Ransome had in mind (which, after all, may have been entirely imaginary, or an amalgam of a variety of promontories on the various lakes) - just as the Gondola is not supposed by most to be the only (even the primary?) model for the Houseboat.
