Going back to the post before last (Peter on digital channels), you are arguing as an intelligent viewer, but look at the listings magazines, and in the daily newspapers. BBC1/2, ITV1 and Channel 4/5 are mainstream. Everything else is shown under 'Digital', quite often on a different page. If the programmers now on BBC4 were on BBC1/2, they would get more viewers straight away. As the BBC admit, by repeating their best BBC4 stuff (much) later on the main channels.
I was amazed to find an excellent programme on Operation Mincemeat, first run on BBC2 the other day. So all is not lost.
It was pure chance that I discovered yesterday's S&A Musical programme on More4, once again hidden in the digital ghetto. I prefer to stay with analogue until we are forced to go digital, since the picture quality is so much better.
And as for catching up with Iplayer, that is a sophisticated action, not for the viewer who takes things as they come.
Having said all that, I enjoyed the S&A programme, even though I would have preferred less rehearsal and more final performance. But an amazing take on the story, which looks like opening up the books to a new audience.
