But the ferry did run then (steam powered?) and until the lake froze hard, it would have cut a channel across the lake, so effectively been an ice breaker. By the time the Ds set out in the storm, the channel would have frozen over. But for a time before that, it would have been jolly dangerous. A good reason why the ice yachting would have started out confined to Rio Bay.
