It was about 20 years after reading P&M (Picts and Martyrs) that I finally discovered what "mouse the sisterhooks" meant. Which fount of knowledge do you think revealed this to me? E F (Edward Frederick) Knight's "Small Boat Sailing"!
Strange that AR (Arthur Ransome) would use a technical nautical term without explaining it, but that scene was meant to create the impression of a big rush, as Nancy rigs Scarab for the first time, and perhaps us readers were meant to feel the bewilderment of the D's (Dick and Dorothea Callum).
