Corned beef is mentioned 8 times in the books. Pemmican occurs 89 times.
Here's the first mention in S&A:
“...You will soon get tired of living on corned beef.”
“Pemmican,” said Titty.
“Pemmican,” said the female native.
And a quote from Great Northern?:
“Corned beef,” said Susan. “Pemmican, I mean. Cold. It’s too hot for any cooking.”
Pressed beef is mentioned only twice, but there is a conflict! See this quote from Swallowdale:
...the paper bag of Mrs Dixon's toffees (molasses), a tin of pressed beef (pemmican), a bottle of milk...
Were the two native terms synonymous?
If any younger readers have never tried corned beef, do yourself a favour and DON'T BUY A TIN! Buy the pre-sliced stuff from the 'deli' of a supermarket as the quality is much nicer. You'll get an idea of what the stuff is, without dismissing it as repulsive straight away! The tinned stuff is very low quality I have found.
