Buchan was advanced, enlightened, well-educated; a scholar, a diplomat, an author; and finally, a peer of the realm and a Governor-General who died in harness. As far as I'm aware he had no "deplorable attitudes" whatever -- he wasn't even a snob (although his achievements might well have entitled him to be one).
