That is because we have yet to discover the logical explanation. Somewhere in the future it will be discovered (just like tides, magnetism, solar eclipses etc). I don't blame AR for ducking out of explaining Titty's success at dowsing. There are only two alternatives: either there is a rational explanation for it (possibly something in the human brain we don't yet understand); or it's 'magic'. Magic only exists in fiction, but it would have been totally contrary to AR's principles of writing to bring magic into Pigeon Post.
(I too saw the BBC 4 programme on logic. They described syllogism, as originally explained by Aristotle. I thought of TarBoard . . .)
