I too only watched a couple of episodes. Sailing friends who watched both the 1963 series and the film have said that the sailing was of a higher standard and the filming thereof was better in the 63 series.
The accents were reminiscent of BBC radio children’s drama especially school stories such as Jennings.
From what I can gather, AR was upset by the BBC’s proposed innovative use of explosives to “improve” the approach to the secret harbour. AR does seem, at times, to be the sort of person who when upset by one aspect is then against everything to do with a project.
AR would have been well paid for rights to use his book, like most authors he would have then been dismayed as to what happened to his creation thereafter.
I, for one, would like to see the 1963 series again to pick up on the episodes that I missed and also to view it with the experience of considerable hindsight.
